Gave a 1-month notice. Boss hired someone else

The year was 2016. I was a dental hygienist and working at a very high-end practice in MA. My pay was barely above the lowest paid dental hygienist at the time, $38/hr, though I had 4 years of experience under my belt. Since I needed a part-time job, I thought this was a good place to be before I head off to dental school. Once I was accepted to a dental school, I gave the practice a month notice so that they can start looking for someone else to replace me. I thought that since they were so nice to hire me for a few months, I thought It would be generous to give that long of a notice. I was floored because of how fast they've moved on and how disposable I was to them. I sent a text back saying that I will not be coming in anymore.
