Getting used to the private sector

I came from public schools where I fully abided by the school contract, including my hours. I got a new job in the private sector and was given specific hours in writing. Turns out, I have meetings scheduled outside all of my work hours. These were hours I was planning to use for doctor's appointments so I didnt have to use PTO. So I've implemented leaving early on days that I have early morning meetings. I really hate that this is just how it is and I have to suck it up and deal with it and salaried employees are exempt. I might just be being dramatic after being burnt out from a toxic workplace, but I think it's bs that salaried means you have no official work hours.
