I’m in healthcare and work in a relatively high volume / stress environment. It’s an area that’s part of an 1199 union and I’ve been working as a union employee for close to 15 years. Last year I was able to score a leadership position in the union itself but it’s still very much limited in the scope that your just covering for management when they are off / etc.
The pay is nice, I get close to 120k and the annual raises are part of a collective bargaining agreement between the union and hospital every 3 years (usually it’s between 3-5% each year). Along with other benefits like paid medical and a pension I’d receive when I hit 62 or 65 whatever. I’m already vested in the pension since I’ve been in it for 15 years. I’ve been recently approached by management for a supervisor job in my department and I know I can do the work, I’m just hoping that it would be a wise decision to drop my union job for it. The pay would be closer to 150k and I believe the hospital provides insurance which is typically better than private organizations. No pension but a matching 403b with 6% contribution of my salary from the employer.
I’m not worried about job security, there is always a need in my field for healthcare. It’s just a comfy office position where I’ll oversee my staff in the day shift. Looking for advice to see if this is a wise choice, I’m a bit burnt out from bench work that I have to do in my current position and it seems like I do management work already on-top of it but not paid like one. I’m 36 years old and single living in NYC
TLDR: do I give up my union position for a management position based on level of comfort and higher salary / matching 403b vs losing pension growth (vested 15 years already)
