I worked at a major cities fire dept. as an EMT. on May 17th I got stabbed on my off day. My right wrist took major damage 4 of my tendons were severed, a bone was fractured . After the hospital visit and surgery later in the week, I was told by my surgeon that I couldn't work until July 5th. My job kept calling me in the mean time (every single day). At first it was just to check on how I was doing but eventually they kept asking me to come back on light duty. I told them that the doc said no work at all until reevaluation on July 5th. My Boss told me to get another opinion and that if I was not able to come back before July 5th he would send it up the chain. The Assistant chief called me later that week and told me I either turn in my resignation or they'll fire me. I live in a right to work state. I called my union and was told there was nothing they could do because I had only been there 7 months before the incident. I decided to let them fire me so I could receive unemployment. I received a letter informing me that I have been fired as of July 3rd and I was unsatisfactory at my position. Anything I should've done differently ? Thank you guys for any insight !
