I recently had a group meeting with a more senior person in my company. The senior person was telling our group of relatively new employees how to move up within the company. And one of the ways was to get more face time with the higher ups, such as by proactively going to group meetings with directors of our company so that they’d remember us when it’s time for promotion. My coworker asked the senior person a question that went something like “isn’t it enough that I just do my job and do it well? Why do I need to do this extra stuff?” And our whole group was silent. It was a fantastic moment. I’ve noticed younger coworkers going against the norm as well. In another meeting there was mention of us going back to in person. And a younger coworker told our CEO “if we go back to in person I’m quitting and you can expect a mass quitting”. I love that the younger generation isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said.
