how do i ask for a promotion?

According to my boss I will be up for a promotion at some point this year. He talked about it vaguely during my performance review, he essentially said the promotion is dependent on how i do on a project. I am currently finished with half of the project, the second half will essentially be repeating everything from the first half in about 2 months. At the company I work at there’s 3 “levels” of promotions you can get, 1 being the “smallest” (you get “senior” added to your current title) and 3 being the “biggest”. How do I go about negotiating this? Do I ask for 3 first, and if they say no then ask for 2?
Should I talk about it now that i’m halfway done with the project, or should I wait for it to be completely done?

Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated!
