I reduced my work hours (and salary) to 80% and had been taking Fridays off to help more with kids, online learning etc. during the pandemic. It’s been about a year and my wife and I agreed that this schedule works much better for our family, but money was getting a little tight. I had noticed though that I’d been putting in extra hours here and there when needed to stay on top of things and even though I was off Friday I was working closer to 85% my typical schedule.
I emailed my boss and explained how this new schedule is working really well for our family and I’d like to stay on it long term, but that I was hoping to increase my salary to 85% as that’s more inline with what I’m actually working (even though I’m off every Friday)
His full response: “It’s no problem”
no meetings, no forms, no justifications, just a quick email and now I’m on a 4 day work week
I guess I post this here bc I see so many people being treated poorly. Just know that there are places out there that will treat you well – hang in there and If you’re a boss, and someone works up the courage to ask for something like this, know that the way you respond makes a huge difference to them and the way they see your business.
