How to make sure a job is not a downfall?

I am 25 and after finishing my education last year, I was unemployed. In my home country, the government supports you and so I could stay jobless, but I started a long term relationship and also theough inflation I decided to apply for a job. The market is not as bad as in the US and we are not overflooded by Karens, so I applied for a simple cashier job at my local supermarket and had a meeting there a few days ago. They pay 2 buck more then minimum wage per hour, shifts are from 6am-1pm and 1pm-8, if you work past 8 (shop closes at 9), you get 50%+ per hour. Parttime here really only means to work less ours then fulltime. So if fulltime is 40 hours a week a 39 hour worker is considered part time. Since I am not really spiritually connected to the idea…

Since I am not really spiritually connected to the idea of becoming a cashier, I asked their parttime hours and the manager told me its usually 21 hours but he would give me the chance to highball for 25 hours per week.
I declined, saying 21 hours is good for me (it really is, I am just looking for enough money to live really).
He then mentiones overtime, how they clock in at a wall-mounted system and that “ofc you can't be free every saturday” but how the shop is flexible with their workers times so he expects the workers to be flexible as well.
All overtime is either payed or converted into free time. He mentioned how younger people usually want the money and how older people rather want the free time. I am all for the free time tbh as I want to visit my bf or have him visit me as much as possible.

So… as I am new to the whole work environment… do you notice any red flags? How do you make boundaries when getting called into work on a day you are not free? Any other advice?
