Been searching and searching for a hybrid/remote job as a chemical engineer w/ 5 years experience. These flexible aren't very prevalent, usually highly competitive. Out of the 64 applications, I've received:
55 – No response
6 – Responded with rejection
1 – Interviewed but didn't continue after first interview (despite promising another interview lol).
1 – Interviewed and offered job, but didn't have any WFH flexibility do I declined.
1 – Interviewed this morning, said they want me to come in in person for a second interview. When I asked about hybrid/remote option, they went on a salvo about how they have been reporting to the office lately because of comradery teamwork etc. They do have the option to work 4/10s, so that is something.
I've been applying to jobs that don't necessarily explicitly state in the description they are remote or hybrid, but jobs that are 100% in front of a PC where I figure there is a good chance. I also cross reference that with company reviews online (glassdoor) to see if reviews state anything about being able to work from home.
I can tell the people I've interviewed with are hesitant to commit to a hybrid schedule before they 'get to know me'. No one so far has wanted to commit to that during the interview process. Even though the guy that interviewed me this morning did so from home (he's also an engineer too, not HR or anything like that).
It's funny how competitive jobs are that explicitly state they are flexible about WFH, consistently >100 applicants. If you want a engineering job on site at some god forsaken refinery, those jobs seem alot more desperate for people.
Just thought other people might find these results interesting.
