I work at a church as the Social Media manager and webpage editor. I only work 15 hours a week.
This job can easily be done from home. I was told not to come into work during the massive snow storm that hit here and to please do all the YouTube posts and web design from home. We have a media person who live records all the services. I do not attend the services. He sends me the videos and I edit and post them online.
The entire week of 12-25 to 12-31 this person left town. No one told me. I sat at my desk here at home and logged in to all applications that I normally would at work. I checked hourly for the video's to be sent to me daily.
There was a Christmas Eve service, a Christmas Day service and a New Year's Day service. I created a new webpage for these to be posted on Christmas Eve. This took about 3 hours of graphic design and editing. The videos were all just sent this morning.
The Pastor of this church came in this past Monday and said he went out of town. He apologized saying “I probably should have told you that but you could have called me.”.
I told him I sat at home hitting “refresh” on the company email waiting for work to be sent to me. I reminded him he told me to work from home (his words). He said “yea the church kinda shuts down over Christmas”.
I walked in to work today and found that I have been docked the entire 15 hours of pay because I was not physically “present” in the office per the congregation. I was logged in and checking email the entire time but they don't consider that working.
The web page I designed is blank because no one sent me any video. They consider it incomplete work.
I was also told I need to “make up the hours” I missed in the office meaning I need to come in double the hours this week and at this point, I hate all the people here and want to scream.
Churches are the most toxic workplace full of selfish people.
