I doubled my expected raise – by knowing my worth

This past Friday was my annual review. I'd done pretty well over the past year, including taking on some very necessary additional responsibilities. Based on conversations overheard from other employees, I could be expecting a 6-7% raise. Also, over the past few months I'd been receiving calls/messages from recruiters about opportunities elsewhere. I'd turned them down because I'm pretty good where I am. However, the last message I received got my attention, when it listed the salary range of 90-95K. I was currently at 80K. Apparently, I was a bit more underpaid than I thought. I brought it to the attention of my boss and asked him what he would do in my situation. He said he was open to considering it – since he didn't want to see me leave. That turned out to be less than a week before my review, which was excellent. My pay raise? 10K,…
