I fell at work and broke my wrist.

I recently fell at work and ended up needing surgery for a broken wrist. I had a plate and 4 screws put in. I've worked for the owner for 19 years. It's a smal llcl (3 employees). So far I've used my insurance to cover expenses.  He has said that he wants to avoid a workman's comp claim and to let him know if bills arise, he will pay them. He is currently paying me while I'm off recovering however he expects me back at work asap. He wanted me to come in the day after surgery.   I have a few questions, I know my Dr has suggested atleast 4 weeks off. Should I go back to work sooner then that? And should I file a workman's comp claim anyway? Aren't I entitled to pain and suffering?  Thanks in advance for helping me think this out.
