I got overpaid and didn’t find out

So I got over paid from August to December at my current job as a professor in KY. I knew I was getting paid more, but that was also during the time where I was taking on more classes on top of my regular load, so I thought everything was kosher. I checked on the status of my paycheck in January, and it revealed that HR had made a mistake, and I was input twice on the payroll system. Essentially, I was paid as two people. Now, they are docking my pay to pay for the overpayment, and it’s gonna take approximately three years to pay it back. Apparently, they have a policy where any instance of overpayment needs to be reported as soon as possible from the person receiving the paychecks, and that they are not responsible for alerting people. So now I’m getting paid like shit looking at…
