Antiwork

I have never regretted going back to work as much as right now.

I went back to work remotely when my son was a year old. We had moved a lot, and I did some schooling during his first year of life, on top of a lot of therapy. Issue is, even though I’ve worked in my field for 8 years, been published in journals, etc, I couldn’t get a job in it, mostly because people worried about my “family obligations” or didn’t want to work with someone who had been out of work for a year, or even one time because my sober status didn’t fit with the culture of the business. I took a service year with Americorps to get back into the workforce, because my son is medically complex and formula was expensive. I also just needed to interact with adults. I applied to this job being told I would tutor students in school remotely. That’s it My job is…

I took a service year with Americorps to get back into the workforce, because my son is medically complex and formula was expensive. I also just needed to interact with adults.

I applied to this job being told I would tutor students in school remotely. That’s it

My job is now curriculum writing, calling parents, grading, scheduling, tons of meetings and one time a 2 day notice to go out of town for 2 days.

I don’t honestly think I would hate it as much if I also didn’t constantly get misgendered. They know I’m NB, I’ve expressed it, we had an entire conversation about how I DO NOT WANT TO BE CALLED Miss, and yet not only is that how my name is always written, my virtual name plate was done, it’s also WHAT MY BOSS CALLS ME CONSTANTLY. Even in calls that are just me and other staff where she calls them by first name

Add to that they somehow made it the least adaptive remote job ever. I’m HOH… they turned off the auto captioning for zoom, all the training has no text, or available transcript, and it’s all bad audio.

I can hear my student fine, they have headsets and my hearing aids attach to my call, but calls where everyone is talking and I can’t see faces and ugh no

Add to that the fact I get paid 5 dollars less than minimum wage where I live, which is already a joke, and I work 5-10 hours a week unpaid

I applied to move up in the company and was told I was overqualified but at this time they couldn’t afford to move me out of my position

I’m quitting next month after my husband gets of his job and we move
