I just caught my boss snooping through my personal laptop.

Little background, I'm a digital marketer (24M) that works for an independent used car dealership in the UK. I've worked there since August 2022, and by December, was up for redundancy due to “low volume of sales”. In January 2023, my boss (who is also the company CEO) sacked our young administration apprentice for reasons I won't get into. Instead of making me redundant, my boss decided that I should take up a few admin duties to pick up the slack in the administration department. I would say about 75% of my role has just been administration since then, with the occasional social media, PPC, email marketing campaign thrown in here and there just to say “we have a marketing department”. That's just tip of the iceberg, so I won't go into much more, but I was still shocked when I caught my boss looking through my personal laptop earlier…

That's just tip of the iceberg, so I won't go into much more, but I was still shocked when I caught my boss looking through my personal laptop earlier today.

When I first joined, there was no equipment for me to use to carry out my job, so I was asked to bring my MacBook Air in to complete tasks. Being one of my personal belongings, it's full of photos, documents and personal projects that I've worked on outside of work hours.

I've been working on a website portfolio over the last few weeks, and had the CMS pinned to my tab bar. I left the room with the tab accidentally open, it looked as if I was working on that in work hours – which I wasn't – and while I was gone, my boss decided to have a little explore through my laptop.

It's clear he was having a snoop through my portfolio and decided to have a look at what apps I had open too. I could see he was snooping around my Adobe account etc. I get that he might have thought I was working on it during work hours (which I wasn't), but it doesn't give him any right to look through my personal belongings.

So with that and the things that have went on beforehand, I'm putting in my notice tonight. I won't speak to him face to face, I'll be sending a letter directly to his e-mail for him to read in the morning.

More than anything, I just want to get back on track with the career that I've been working towards. I feel I'm at a point where I'm very good at what I do, and I deserve to work with a company that values my skills.

So yeah, that's my little story, happy to take suggestions/ideas going forward. Am I being rash?
