To start out, I live in the state of Minnesota.
During the course of the day, my supervisor was engaged in a lengthy conversation with me on the subject of the Titanic submarine that went missing recently, for a considerable duration of approximately six hours. Did literally nothing. Following this incident, my responsibility as the only employee here compelled me to open the store this morning and subsequently close the establishment today, as per my scheduled 12-hour shift, which I considered manageable. However, prior to her departure, my supervisor casually mentioned the possibility of my being required to work a full day tomorrow. (Another 12 hour shift, which is open to close, so 12 hours not including time it takes to close)
Consequently, this would result in a demanding work schedule with four consecutive 12-hour shifts from Tuesday to Friday this week, in addition to the six-hour shift I already completed on Monday. The total number of hours to be worked this week would amount to 54 hours + extra time from opening and closing.
Additionally, I have not yet completed any tax-related documentation such as a I-9 and harbor concerns regarding the improper withholding of my taxes. It is my belief that the withholding process may not be in compliance with the appropriate regulations.
Furthermore, it has come to my attention that I am not afforded any breaks or provided with designated break areas, which is in violation of state labor laws. According to these regulations, employers are obliged to allocate sufficient time for employees to utilize restroom facilities and partake in meal breaks. If a break lasts less than 20 minutes, it must be included in the calculation of hours worked. Restroom breaks must be granted at least once every four consecutive hours of work, which, in my case, is not observed as I am required to lock the store while attending to personal needs. Additionally, meal breaks of 20 minutes (mandatory for 8-hour shifts) must be provided, with a minimum of a 4-hour interval between restroom breaks.
It is worth noting that although the owner of the establishment assumes the role of financial responsibility, they have displayed shortcomings in fulfilling this obligation, as many bills have been paid extremely late which makes me nervous.
The current workload I am facing surpasses any previous professional commitments I have encountered, and as a 20-year-old individual, I earnestly desire to allocate time outside of my work responsibilities to engage in activities that foster personal growth and enhance my overall quality of life.
Given my age and relative lack of experience, I find myself somewhat uncertain about how to effectively navigate and manage the current situation I am confronted with. It is challenging for me to strike a suitable balance between my rigorous work demands and the need for personal time and fulfillment outside of my professional obligations.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
