I now get this page.

Found this page and thought it was silly, now I get it. Now I’m ranting too. Context: I work in food service on the admin side in an office. I have a degree and mba. I was hired as a catch all secretary along with being the hiring manager up until our GM physically interviews them. It’s not a hard job and I make $21/hour with no benefits. Been with them over a year now and I’ve wanted a more defined role. I do not have a job description, and since we hired more people the other random tasks have been delegated to them. We’re a growing restaurant local chain that’s going from 2 to several stores. “There’s opportunities here” So… Now I’m part-time 25ish hours making $21/hour with zero job description. My work schedule is not defined, only been a verbal conversation. So I do show up at random…

Context:
I work in food service on the admin side in an office. “There’s opportunities here”

So… Now I’m part-time 25ish hours making $21/hour with zero job description. My work schedule is not defined, only been a verbal conversation. So I do show up at random times, this isn’t a healthy habit, but I get my tasks done. I commute daily 1.5 hours and $10 in gas on the low average to go an office to open my laptop.

Well had a meeting with owners and Op Manager (we hired him recently at $100k) to address me coming in sporadically. Was supposed to be Op Manager and I. He hasn’t met with me in a month about anything. It’s purpose was to speak on tasks and scheduling. Blindsided. I asked for a job description and they go “well it isn’t always definable what it is you do”. I haven’t had one complaint or write up as I get the job done. So there only problem is me coming into the office. I asked if I could work from home as I have a laptop, that was a no. I asked them “what is it that you want from me as an employee, what I want is to work full time”. Well that was a “no,there isn’t enough work to do to be full time, and you coming in sporadically doesn’t set well for us” … my response “okay and I understand that, but I don’t have a job description that list my working hours” … “will this become full time, because we had a similar conversation in January”… “we can’t say”… bunch of talking in circles saying “can’t define your role” “well we work around you”

I almost quit after that, in my mind, “you work around me? You can’t even give me a job description. You won’t let me work full time. I commute to an office to use a landline and a laptop. You think it’s a blessing for me for you to allowing me to work here? Speak on there’s opportunities here but can’t say when or what that looks like? I didn’t get a Christmas bonus while everyone else did? I hired half of our crews at different stores”

Also this is in the Portland OR area, cost of living is high, gas 5.50. Min wage is $15 and with tips our people are bringing 20+. Livable income is 60k

I now understand the complaints here, employers don’t care but want you to fully commit
