I see so often people being encouraged to discuss your salary with coworkers to see if you’re being paid fairly.

However, my last employer had a rule against this very thing. If you were caught, you'd be fired. Is that the case with anyone else? I was laid off because my job was outsourced overseas, so I otherwise left on good terms.
