So I (34M) have worked for a non-profit for a few months. I could tell the executive director (ED, F48) was a little kooky from the get-go, and the pay was not great, but they were doing good work for kids in need and I needed a better job than stocking shelves. All of the kids & parents liked me a lot, as did the other few employees.
My performance review was glowing, but the ED told me that because another girl left for a new job, she needed to eliminate my position and change me to part time hourly, as well as shift some responsibilities around and have me work significantly less desirable hours at a different location. She verbally offered me the position during the performance review, but I told her I would need a few days to check the math and check with my family, which she said was fine.
She emailed me a few days later reiterating the change in responsibilities and hours, and that I've been doing a great job. I responded within a few hours saying that I'd accept the position on the following conditions:
- Pay me at my previous (higher) rate for the current pay period, which we're already halfway through
- Give me a couple days off (that I was going to ask for or take off anyway)
- Pay me for potential after-hours or weekend work, or adjust my hours to make sure it stays consistent each pay period
I also said “please let me know if that will work for you.”
The next morning – the day I was supposed to start new hours – I went to check my company email, and it said my account was deleted. ED is out of state for two weeks, and I've heard nothing from her.
So, I'm guessing she got pissed that I gave her any pushback whatsoever and decided she doesn't want me to work for her. Unless I hear that she has accepted my counteroffer, I'm not going in except maybe to collect my belongings later this week.
