I was just pulled in to my boss’ office for discussing wages. I have a single employee under me and I had asked her a week or two ago about her pay structure, not about what her compensation is. She’s in a sales position so I simply asked about if they were paying her hourly, salary, per sale, etc. As her manager, I feel like I’m privy to this information. When she told me she was salary, I left it at that and did not ask for what amount of salary she is making.
Well she went and snitched on me for “asking her salary” and my boss just spoke to me about it. They were actually nice and had my back about it, but they were saying that the owner would be making an announcement next week that discussing wages is against policy. Should I be petty and bring up that it is against the law to prohibit discussion of wages? This will be in a meeting in front of the entire company. Or should I just send an anonymous letter after the fact to keep myself safe? We all know how retaliation can be.
