Prefacing this by saying I work 2 jobs just to break 50k, and the full time offers 401k with NO MATCH. Part time is a state job with 401a, match, and a union that's actually worth a damn.
Here's the breakdown – 40 hours Tuesday through Friday for the full time, 16 hours Saturday and Sunday for the part time, with Monday off for recovery, doctors appointments, and anything else that needs done.
For three years, with the full time, Tuesday through Friday has been the norm. Rarely any overtime, maybe a Monday if we're in a crunch and Friday is a holiday. For two years, I've been filling in for the forklift driver who got fired for drinking on the job that he has yet to replace, telling me “don't worry, this will be temporary.” Mind you, I'm not OSHA certified. The last time OSHA was there was when someone lost a finger to our old, dilapidated equipment.
On Thursday of last week, he comes in to the break room saying “starting next Monday, we will be working Mondays and Saturdays, 8 hours each day. This is mandatory, any plans or appointments you have, reschedule them. The only exceptions will be medical emergencies or a death in the family.” I pulled him aside afterwards, explaining and reiterating that Monday is my only day off, and that I have plans that day. He texts me on Friday saying “Have a great weekend…see you bright and early on Monday.” I again reiterate that Monday is my only day off and I have plans that day.
Today, Tuesday, I get called into the office for my write up. I'm now expected to work 8 hours on Monday, 12 hours Tuesday through Friday, and if I want a day off, burn my accumulated hours at my state job during the busiest season of the year, just so I can run the temporary forklift position, to get out the literal 1 million cases for this big government contract, when almost every single box in each case is an ounce underweight because he wanted to save literal pennies for the cardstock per each carton.
Tallied all up, that's 72 hours per week for the next two fucking months. I can't wait to leave this forsaken place.
