For context, I work at a grocery store and work in the deli and am cross trained in our bakery. I’m not quite sure the policy, but I’ve heard other deli coworkers get in trouble from my deli manager for assisting other deli coworkers while they are off the clock. It was more of a ‘hey you’re not punched in, you can’t be doing that’ sort of thing, not super strict or anything.
Today I am working in the bakery, I punched out and had my coat and everything on and was just gathering the rest of my belongings from the department, when a woman comes up and wants me to slice bread for her. I informed her I was off the clock and therefore couldn’t slice, but she went and got the owner. He told me I needed to slice, and I said to him ‘aren’t I not supposed to slice when I’m not on the clock?’ and he told me ‘there is no excuse to turn away a customer’. I went to grab another employee afterwards who was trained to slice to slice the woman’s bread, but the owner is still upset with me.
Does anyone know the policies on doing even a little amount of work while not on the clock?
