I retired from the Army during an economic slow down. I was glad to find a job with a company that provided training to the Army that was pretty interesting. I basically played Arma II all day.
When I was hired I just asked for my salary while I was in the Army. I figured with my new retirement check I would be living fat. The team I worked on was filled with smart folks who were military doctrine writers. The only problem for them was that 80% of what we did was really just nerd gamer stuff. After about a year my gamer buddy and I were the clear rockstars of the team.
One summer day my family went over to his house for a cookout. His wife casually mentioned that she was upset he was only making 70K a year while our team lead, who was nice but incompetent, was making 110K.

I asked our team lead for a raise, but he said they couldn’t give someone a 10K raise. I started job hunting that day and had a job offer in two weeks. As I was cleaning out my desk our big boss rolled in and tried to get me to stay. He said “I can pay you more”. I replied, “Yes, but you didn’t “
