I recently started working at a company doing private lessons that are two hours long and extremely physically demanding. However I have taught these lessons before and I’m good at what I do.
When I was hired, I was told I would shadow a lesson, then have a probationary period where I’m paid $15 hourly. After that, I’d be hired and given the code to enter the building, and paid $20 hourly. Great!
Except I was given said code and hired, only to be told that they “want” to move me up to $20, but are “looking to see more same day availability.” What this means is that they want to be able to call me and in an hour have me arrive, work for two hours, and leave. I’m a busy person, and if I’m not scheduled I make plans. I have yet to say yes to any same day lessons. I’m hired, but being paid $15. Minimum wage in my state/city is $15.50 so I’m being paid below minimum with a carrot being dangled, as if I don’t put my entire life on hold to wait for their beck and call I haven’t earned what I was promised.
I’m so sad because I genuinely love the work-I love sharing this skill I have with others. But this is not the first company in this line of work to lie to me about pay. I guess I’m just at a loss for what to do and tired of being treated like human garbage. If anyone has any advice on how to approach this situation, it would be greatly appreciated.
