I recently decided to swap to careers and went to the world I never thought I would. Because I am posting on my main account ill play nice right now. I took this job since I working in tandem with it, they offered for me to leave my other organization and join on with theirs.
I am supposed to work in an IT-style environment but it's mixed into education. What was promised/on my job description versus what I actually do is nothing close. Granted I am in a field where things change daily and we have to adapt for the sake of children. I feel as though I am easy to get along and I have solved many tech issues. Recently, I feel that every time I open my mouth to “work on a team” people get mad or their feelings get hurt because I asked questions. I don't understand everything in the world of education so I am trying to make sense of it along with a Development Operations mindset. If I see or know a problem that we can use technology to fix it then let's do it (not for the sake of taking people's jobs rather making them easier). Well I recently gave mindset up, in a world we teach those to work together I don't feel like this happens because people want it their way and because I'm a “new” employee (even though I have worked with these people for so long) I don't get respected enough to be brought in. Fine, ill teach and go home just make sure my paycheck hits the bank right?
I am a full-time employee but this is where things get odd, I have worked private sector and been in the military. I was told to fill out an intent form during a meeting. Intent meaning – am I going to return the following year, do I want to transfer, am I going to retire. It also had a section of what I wanted to do?
I understood when I was in the military and I had a contract in which they (someone) would approach you and make an inquiry if you are staying to talk options. Teachers are the same way they are contracted here not full-time hired employees. As I said earlier am full-time hired I took this piece of paper as a straight-up insult. Am I crazy?
Sure, I am not working the job I was promised or had agreed upon in writing and I am mad about that but to have me fill out a piece of paper before I walk out of the office, is odd. Granted I wasn't the only one who had to fill this out but if I decide to look for another job isn't that my own business? I understand that there is a budget and they want to know what the next year is going to look like but I am a full-time employee… What I decide to do is what I decide to do but this type of stuff shouldn't be on paper? Maybe, a side-bar conversation at the most?
If I am not going to return to my job I would give notice and do the right thing to not burn myself. To hand me a paper with those types of options where I can either lie and say yeah I plan to, but if I get offered something during the summer or at another time and decide to leave. I don't want some half-baked piece of paper given during a meeting to be the deciding factor of my relationship with the organization. I also feel like employers should not be able to back their employees into corners like them to set them up. Sure, we can say it's to make sure they fall within budget – what I see is they are fishing to see who is thinking what to start burning them.
Here is another thing, I need the money and I don't mind what I am doing even though it's not IT. I don't want to screw myself but might have already. I refused to mark options on that paper I stood my ground on it which might have put a target on my back. I cant take this anywhere because it will just get covered up and I will either be transferred anyway or worse, fired.
I just want to know that I am not crazy, employers shouldn't be able to ask leading questions like and on top of it… It was in writing… am I crazy?
