Is there a benefit to firing someone instead of letting them quit?

When a couple of other people quit at my job, they were terminated before the end of their two weeks, with cause. I don't see an advantage to this for the employer. And a follow up question, will those employees be at a disadvantage now? Will the causes of termination follow them as new employers call their old bosses?
