I’ve been working for a large retail company in the UK for just about a month now, before I worked in the security industry for 4~ years and never joined a security union purely cos I never lasted longer than 6 or so months, due to incompetent management and the poor working conditions.
But now I’m contemplating renewing my old membership with USDAW (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) but my mom says it’s pointless cos unions are useless (in time she told me it was because of her past experience with the unions and it taking 3 or so years for a promised pay rise). She says I could just go to HR but I don’t trust any sort of HR for the sole reason of “they don’t care about you, all they see is a number”, I would rather have some form of representation for if anything happens and USDAW is a primary union in the UK, so yeah, anyone had any experiences (good or bad) with the union?
