Unfortunately not much has been advanced in socialism “officially” since the 90's. About 10 years ago I had a good friend who was a Ph.d student at Stanford. He said all his professors were “socialists” at work, in their academic papers, and in their classes. Meanwhile they took every opportunity in tear down their students (and often their colleagues) for being stupid and lazy and worthless and not worth consideration or respect. They then drove their BMWs back to their million dollar silicon valley homes to have their housekeepers cook them steak to go with one of the Napa/French/Italian wines from their wine cellars.
Socialism has been dead in the mainstream for decades. We're what's left. We're the experts now because we live it. It's good to have some historical reference, read books about socialism, but you've got to see that it is in what you do every day. You are the best source of what socialism means right now. Capital fucks us every day and thinks nothing of it. It's normal like sunshine and the air we breathe. What do we do about it? If our culture is going include socialism, you people here are the ones who are actually going to figure it out.
Understand the academic and historical perspectives. These will help you. But you are the power. You are the ones they can't do without. That's why they cajole and coerce and shame you into taking extra shifts and forgoing PTO and not calling out when you're sick. They do these things because they need you. Their jobs/businesses would fail without you. You give them your power for pennies in return. You're better than that. You're smarter than that. You're more important than that. Our job is to make them realize what is undenighably the truth. This is socialism now.
