Job Market Inquiry

I’ve posted here before about a less than favorable situation I’ve been put in by my current employer. I’m dealing with an abusive client that I’ve been forced to stay on because I apparently have “valuable historical information” – I’ve only been on the account since April (inherited from the previous owner that left my company for another job). I’ve expressed to multiple former coworkers and friends that I am open to finding something else and am not above quitting before I find it. I don’t want to quit without something lined up and end up without work for longer than 6 months. Is it really as bad out there as people say?
