So I just came from a call centre job where they refused us breaks (had to answer phones while eating,) had bugs, made us come to an office when they could have had it wfh, expected 90-115 calls from me in a 6hr period, and had absolutely toxic work place culture. For example, the last day I was there someone from the other side of the business had this interaction with me:
Them; when is your baby due?
Me (while smoking mind you!!): uhm, I’m not pregnant?
Them: oh. Wow. You look like you’re carrying twins.
Pretty sure he got zero consequences. (Don’t worry I’ve reported them to the labour board)
My new job however, has 3 weeks paid vacation, 20 weeks of maternity/paternity leave top up (in Canada you get a set number of weeks at 55% pay. This company will “top up” that to 75% pay,) full benefits that have already kicked in, salary, and work from home. My bosses have been super personable, and even the VP of my department has come into a group chat to say call volume is way less important than call quality. 40 calls in 8hrs is a “busy” day. Basically I now work from home, make more money, and work less. I’ve also already received my first pay despite today being day 5 on payroll.
All of this is to say that the things I’m getting from my new employer should be considered basic decency/standard “perks” but they aren’t. The fact I feel absolutely lucky to have this job is kinda depressing.
