TLDR: I’m a key holder who closes occasionally and one manager just lost their dad with an unknown RTW date. I’ve got plans on Saturday that’ve been made for months. Do I tell my manager that I can’t close that day?
I work for a grocery chain. Our store management consists of three managers: store manager, assistant store manager, and customer service manager. I am a department manager and key holder so I close the entire store once a week but our old ASM transferred to another store 2 weeks ago so I’ve been closing 4 days since they left, and I’m still scheduled to close 4 days this week and next. Store manager never closes, and district has taken their sweet time bringing in an ASM replacement. Third manager literally JUST lost their father today and asked me to come in tonight to relieve them, which I did even though I was at dinner across the street with my wife’s grandparents. We have no idea when the manager will be back. Me and three coworkers had plans together on Saturday. We never all have the same days off and don’t know when it’ll happen again so we made a huge plan to get together that night. Wife insists I tell my store manager that no matter what I cannot come in on Saturday because we’ve had these plans for months but I have a problem of being unable to say no especially under certain circumstances (like the one I’m in). If the manager isn’t back by then, do I just come in and close or do I tell bossman I can’t do it?
I’d be happy to fill in any gaps I may have left in the story I’m just unsure of what to do
