Laid off and HSA stolen

Im guessing I may have a lawsuit or class action lawsuit here… I was working for a company and signed up for the health savings account, pretax 2k… as I was planning on a bunch of dental work etc. I used about $800 by November when I was part of a large company layoff (about 70% of staff). Which caught me off guard as when I signed up I knew it was use it or lose it by the end of the year and thought I had six more weeks to use the remaining $1200. The representative told me to contact my old employer, so I did… they told me that I could only have health options reimbursed that happened before the layoff day… to which I’m like I was told I have through the year, had the money removed from my account… and had no idea that layoffs would happen or I would have gone to the dentist sooner etc.
Anyways any advice would be appreciated on what to do now? Obviously money is tight so hiring a lawyer would cost more than they owe but this feels shady for sure.
