Hi, I’m a lawyer in Europe and I’m confronted with a problem. I’m not sure that this is the correct place to ask, but I have faith in this subreddit that people will be able to help with my decision.
I have been representing a government corporation in construction law for nearly 20 years. I like working with them, they like working with me, the pay is good, but some problems have arisen.
I’m very proficient in what I do and I am (for the lack of a better word) irreplaceable in my country. Workers inside the corporation have been talking about outing me because of how much I ask, and the man in charge is starting to lean their ear to them.
I’m in need of help. Which way do you think is best for me to approach this situation? The general director is reasonable enough to continue working with me, but with the condition of slashing my pay in half, which would be disastrous to my financial life.
There are possibilities of working for other clients in my country, but I wouldn’t like to end a fruitful 20-year-long career with my current client yet. Yes, this is stubbornness coming from me, as it is very hard, near impossible, to score another contract with another company in the same field that I work in.
What would you do?
