So I was originally told I would be able to get leave of absence at my retail job to go to my internship, which is required by my university. Since it was for school, I was told, “No problem, we can make it work”. Come to find out five weeks before I'm set to leave that I won't be getting the leave because my boss's boss's boss, the district head honcho, vetoed it. When I asked, “what compromise can we come to?” I was told that I'd have to quit and reapply, but I'd get to keep my position and pay rate. When I asked what would happen if I didn't quit, I was told I'd be fired for missing shifts, because they would continue to put me on the schedule.
Come to find out a couple of days ago that the reason they wouldn't approve a leave is because they're doing a company wide bonus and a pay raise for all employees in July, and they didn't want to pay an extra person. Never mind the fact that I'm trained in 90% of what goes on at that store. Never mind the fact that I was one of their best salespeople. Never mind that I can fill in for any shift no matter the job. I'm not valuable enough to keep. So I quit when it would hurt them the most, and I don't know yet if I'll reapply when I get back from my internship. I'm so fed up with retail. Are there even jobs out there where you're treated like a person and not a number? Are there good companies where employees are valued? I'm so disillusioned right now. I'm tired of being just a body on the floor.
