I was in a local chain fish fry a couple days ago. There’s about 7 or 8 of them in the area. Food’s good, so I go semi regularly. Overheard a few employees talking about it. I asked if I heard them right. Yup. I asked if that was a collective employees’ decision. Nope. “Management told us that’s what they’re doing.” So credit card tips and tip jar tips are being taken and given away, without asking them.
I told them that’s the gift that keeps on giving. Wage theft and the company will donate that money and get publicity and a tax write off; employees won’t get any compensation for it, and management isn’t giving up any of their pay.
Even though they’re not waitstaff/bartenders and making the tips those people are, it’s still money. It’s still income.
I always threw a few bucks in the tip jar. Not anymore.
