I’m going to try to keep this to a minimum so here are the cliff notes:
Have been employed at my company for 15 years and now in a senior position
Grew a major account by myself
Moral started to go to shit over covid as with most companies .. we were understaffed and my team was responsible for the workload of 6 people when it was just the 3 of us.
Things appeared to be getting slightly better and more people were hired to our team.
I have been battling a serious reproductive disease for years and needed a very big surgery
Gave 6 months notice on said surgery as I didn’t want to leave anyone high and dry
Took 2.5 months leave to recover
*a week after my surgery, my boss calls me to tell me he’s cutting everyone’s hours.. which I now realize can’t technically be done to someone on salary such as myself…any insight on this?**
I don’t hear a peep from him for almost the entire recovery. He texts me close to when I was supposed to return fishing to see when I was coming back.. no regard for asking how I was feeling at all.
Finally return to work.
He meets with me.. updates me on business and says things are getting better and we should be returning to our full salaries by Labor Day.
4 days later, 2 people are laid off.
One from my team and one person who had been there for 12 years.
A week later, another person is laid off. I should mentioned this layoff made zero sense, as this person was a huge asset to our company.
IMPORTANT: she was laid off instead of a man that my boss hired soley on looks and his status in the gay community. The woman who was laid off was not only a POC, but also opened several new accounts. The other sales man that was hired has ZERO experience in our industry and has been given free reign.
This person called me upon her termination to tell me that my boss was bashing me to this other salesman in front of other employees, including her. Saying things like “I can’t wait for her to have her surgery hopefully that changes her attitude she’s such a bitch” among many other things. She also informed me that he was discussing layoffs within my department and weighing pros and cons on who should be let go. I feel like I’ve been living a lie for 15 years.
I need to get out of there ASAP.
I need to know the best way to go about this without getting fired.
Should I wait for my full salary to kick back in and then go back on medical leave?
Or should I ask to be laid off hoping he will abide?
