At the ripe, old age of 15, I wanted to get a job to earn some money for my pc building hobby. My mom informed me that a local steakhouse hired at 15, so we made a resume and got a work permit. I got an interview and got hired on the spot. Everything was going well until my first day on the job. I was a busser making $7.25/hr, and I was there from 5pm when my shift started, until 11:15pm when my sister came to pick me up, and basically dragged me out. Thank God she did, because there was a chance I was going to be there until 11:30, STILL MAKING $7.25/hr! Labor laws dictate in my state, that the latest a 15 year old can work during a school week is 7pm, and summer break pushes that to 9pm. This happened during a February, so it was a school week(albeit, it was a Friday night) By the way, there were no breaks, so I was standing around and walking around for 6 hours, for $7.25/hr. They ended up sending me home telling me “We need you to work past 7pm(so they probably knew the labor law) and if you can’t, then it won’t be a good fit for you to work here.” 3 months later, I got a notification that I had been approved for time off for Holy Week and Pascha(Orthodox Christian Easter. It’s rarely celebrated the same day as everyone else, so we usually get to take advantage of the sales for that stuff after everyone else celebrates it, and the stores liquidate the stock of candy, etc, but I digress) I hadn’t been to work between my first day and the approved time off, so that was at least one funny thing that I got out of that terrible first job experience.
