My grandfather passed away in the middle of the night on the fourth of July. For the last two days I have been at work, stepping out whenever I can to coordinate things with my family. My mother is devastated.
I told my manager I would need to take an unexpected leave to support my family and attend his services. His response was to tell me how sorry he was and how to please let him know if there was anything he could do to help me, that taking a couple days would be perfectly fine. He assured me that my workload for the next few days would be light to try and reduce stress.
He must have neglected to tell anyone to keep my workload light because shortly later, several team leaders approached me and filled my plate with urgent orders for the rest of the week into the weekend. HR responded to my email offering me one day of bereavement leave. Anything more I would have to use PTO. I get this email at the same time as a notice that the company will be doing maintenance two weeks from now, and that if I cannot work a graveyard shift I will have to use PTO to cover that day.
As usual, empty promises and words from management that mean nothing.
