I have recently been offered a promotion to manager. Implicit in this transition is a switch over from hourly to salary. Normally no big deal, however the “managers” are expected to work insane hours constantly. The other managers I have spoken with tell me 40 hours a week is a fantasy and the money is less considering overtime I could have made it I continue as hourly.
My question is, is it normal for managers so take it in the shorts everytime? I like the job and all; but the implication that – if they pay a salary instead of hourly then they effectively own 100% or your life- seems wrong. Is this the case everywhere? How can I enforce a 40 hour limit on salary and not tank the job?
Keeping an appropriate work life balance is important to me. I like to work but it seems to me that people putting so much unpaid overtime under the guise of “im salary so im always on call” is creating an expectation that after a certain level the Job is your life.
