Mil with mono leads to discussion about time off

I work with my mother in law who is now going to be out 8-16 weeks with mono. I was talking with my husband about this who said him and 2 of his friends/coworkers had once agreed that they would, if given the chance, harm themselves with a machine at work just a little- just enough to get some them off work for a while. Husband went back to work. More time passed. Son passed away Dec 10. With 3 days bereavement and weekends- that put my husband date or return to work on December 23rd.

It’s so unfair

Edit: I should clarify- mil is on either paid leave or short term disability. My husband and I were jealous she got so much time off (obv not sunshine and roses bc mono sucks)
