Must be able to multi-task!

Every job ad I look at insists that the applicant be able to work in a fast paced environment and be able to multi-task. Life experience and a quick google search agree: it is impossible to multi-task. No human being – not one – can do it. I used to think when mobile phones first featured call-waiting and holding and conferencing and being able to time your micro-waving lunch simultaneously – but that's nuts! Surely anyone would only be annoyed if they were on a call and got another, and another. Being a human being doesn't work this way. I also recall reading that J.R.R. Tolkien's elves are able to do two things at once (but not three) they can maybe play music and watch over the lembas baking( i dunno) – two things about elves though, they are not human and they're fictional! Knowing I can't make a difference…

Knowing I can't make a difference with this post I still ish to high heaven that prospective employers would stop demanding that we be able to do two or three or six things at once. No one can!
