My coworker and I are systems engineers. Our job sits between help desk and the other engineering teams. Most days I am doing basic things in AD, exchange, and a bunch of crappy software apps the other teams use.
We started at about the same time last year. Since then, we went from reporting to the director to a different manager. He's more versed in database administration, rather than infrastructure. My coworker does more projects while I focus on day to day help desk escalations, on-boarding, off-boarding, tasks from other teams, and data center support (not very often). The both of us have been asking for more help because my coworker needs to offload projects and I can't take a lot on because of the day to day stuff.
A few months ago, we were told the director requested 4 more people for our team, with the expectation of getting 2, at the very least 1. I was hoping for more people because I want to move from the area, but I can't because of required data center support. My job is 99.9% remote otherwise.
Earlier this month, I was in a meeting with my coworker and our manager. 5 minutes left in the meeting, our manager says “I can't stay long because of another meeting. I have been informed the company will not be hiring anyone else for the foreseeable future.” Both of us were stunned and pissed off. We were chatting afterwards about this crap and we both decided it was time to jump ship. He's holding out because he has a lot more experience than i do as an engineer, so finding another job will be easy. I told him if he finds a place hiring multiple people to refer me, we have worked great together for the past year. He said I can list him as a reference too.
I'm glad we both work well together and he is doing that to help me out.
