I'm a mechanic washington state. Alot of us work as “flat rate” or pay based on the jobs we are doing IE a brake flush pays 1 hour, an oil change is .5. And I just got switched from hourly to flat rate told there was no over time.
And also was told that overtime is taxed different. I have a decent knowledge in taxes (for a 23 yo) and I know how tax brackets work so this ate away at me.
Que Google and looking at government sites. Over time is not taxed differently if anything you will get it back tax season… stumbled across legal literature saying flat rate does get overtime. Called LNI yes I am correct and read the literature correctly.
Confronted my boss about it today said actually the is literature about this your under paying your employees, boss well you do know i gave you a 2$ raise when i switched you right… Okay give me a list of the literature and I'll review it and send it to HR, promptly pulls it out of my pocket and hands it over to him. “You know this is concerning because your spending time looking into…” cut him off my personal time.
Told him how flat rate over time is calculated and he was like yeah this probably won't fly. Wait till he finds out underpaid wages are claimable for up to 3 years and a few employees would actually walk away with fay bags
