I work in a global manufacturing facility in safety. I also provide basic first aid at times in the event of an emergency. A few months ago I made an employee go to the emergency room because her blood pressure was over 200/130. She did not want to leave initially thinking she could chill out and get it down then go back to work. I told her I would not allow her to return to work and she needed to go to the ER. She finally relented and went to the hospital where she received care.
Recently she told me that she received an attendance point against her for that night. I was floored. I couldn't believe they would punish her for being sent home by me because she had a medical emergency. I followed up with my supervisor about this because I just couldn't believe this was a policy. He compared it to being out because you went to the doctor and said it fell under the lines of being fit for duty. I let him know how much bullshit that was. He just told me unfortunately it's the policy for all American facilities for this company. I understand that it's not his policy but this just seems like such a crappy policy that should not be legal. I've been conflicted ever since because I can't let people risk their lives like that. I just feel a medical emergency should at least exempt someone from attendance points.
