My job is changing my schedule and this is my last straw… Maybe

Long story short, where I work is semi-going under. I'm working at an early childcare center, and my daughter also attends. I've been working here for 3 years and have put up with a lot of bs, as have a lot of the staff other than me. Right now they are trying to change my schedule by extending my break to keep me there longer. But frankly, I don't want to do that. That's a half hour extra of my time that I'm not getting paid for and that puts me at a half hour less time to spend with my family. I have already explained these reasons and more to one of the higher-ups when they tried to do this to me a few weeks ago. By the way. I found out my schedule changed by looking at the main schedule.

No one informed me. No one asked if it was something I could do or was willing to do. I expected a set schedule when I started. I don't mind coming in early or staying late sometimes if asked. But they didn't discuss any of this with me. I threatened to turn in my 2 weeks and they dropped it. One higher up tried to make it seem like it was a mistake, while the other one told me the truth that it was just the first higher up trying to figure out a way to reduce people's overtime.

We are short staffed. People rarely come in for interviews (if they do they don't accept, or they accept and quit shortly after, or they stay and aren't good staff members) but we've had some come in recently. I was told the schedule change would be temporary (until May) for the new staff to start working. But that seems like a take an inch, take a mile situation. I don't believe they will change me back.

I don't want to go on too much, but I'm willing to answer questions and clarify if needed for my reasonings for things, but I have some ideas of my next steps and wanted opinions.

  1. I turn in my 2 weeks and see what that does. They could accept it and I have to find something else fast. Or this could lead me into opening the doors for negotiations if they are really trying to keep me, which I think they are.

  2. If I get into the negotiation stage, I plan on asking for that extra half hour to become overtime. I also want to ask that I don't have to do those end of day duties that push me into leaving later than I normally would (closer to the time they want me scheduled for).

I can't ask for a raise as I'm capped at what I'm making now.

Ultimatey I'm looking to vent here, ask about my plan, and help brainstorm what to do next if I can't negotiate. I didn't give a lot of details because I didn't want to make this too long and I have to leave soon. I will answer questions and clarify if needed Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
