My job takes our tips to pay our insurance policy. illegal or just shitty?

i work as a valet, so there’s a company insurance policy for the cars while we handle them. each shift a certain proportion of our tips is taken based on how many cars we parked that day, so even tho the clients tip us like $100 cash we could only walk away with $75. i’ve looked online and only found laws about tipping as it applies to tipped professionals like servers. not much about valet or if the valet are usually responsible for their own insurance policy. i have a call with an employment lawyer tomorrow to talk about it, so i’m mostly just ranting here. like i worked my ass off at our highest earning location and they took almost 40% of the tips me and my coworker earned that night. it’s fucked up. why aren’t they taking the cost out of their profits like other business costs? they’re…
