Antiwork

My latest interview was hardly about the job itself but rather an inquisition of my opinions over how I surely agree remote/hybrid work is a bad thing.

Had a recruiter call two weeks ago about a possible job. Led to a recent interview with the company itself. The only thing going for this role was that it was a professional step-up. So I was intrigued. But everything else was a con: It paid more but forced you to revert to being a contractor for a minimum of 12 months. I currently have health insurance but nope – you get to shoulder the costs of that yourself in the wild west of the health insurance marketplaces. You get to work 5 days a week in the office downtown where you're liable for parking costs and also having your car broken into because surprise! – as a contractor you can't park in the garage. It paid more but I figured in commuting, lunches, and parking costs…I'd likely be at a draw and best and likely financially worse off. Definitely…

The only thing going for this role was that it was a professional step-up. So I was intrigued. But everything else was a con:

  • It paid more but forced you to revert to being a contractor for a minimum of 12 months.
  • I currently have health insurance but nope – you get to shoulder the costs of that yourself in the wild west of the health insurance marketplaces.
  • You get to work 5 days a week in the office downtown where you're liable for parking costs and also having your car broken into because surprise! – as a contractor you can't park in the garage.
  • It paid more but I figured in commuting, lunches, and parking costs…I'd likely be at a draw and best and likely financially worse off. Definitely worse when you factor in health insurance being shouldered by the employee as mentioned earlier.

I decided to take the interview to just get some practice, especially because it was for a role that was a step up. But I was surprised. It was a 30 min video call with the team lead and hiring manager. But NONE of it was about the role itself.

It was all about how I'd fit in with company culture and most of the questions were about why I “hated” remote/hybrid. I lied through my teeth and likely will be offered this job which I'm obviously going to turn down. For a professional step-up there was not one technical question asked which leads me to believe this is likely a glorified Tier 1-plus role masquerading as a Tier 2 role to get people to interview.

These people are delusional to think people would earn less just for the “glory” to work for their company. JUST PAY BETTER and I'd be willing to deal with the bullshit. At least I can preserve my existing remote job and don't need to accept this one. But damn, I'm sick of calls and interviews that just lead up to a professional bait-and-switch for worse pay.
