My lover and I are immigrants from abroad. We both have family far away. Because my sweetheart lives five hours away from my place, we have to make extra effort to see each other. They’ve worked crazy hours and rarely get two days off scheduled together. They were able to get Christmas days scheduled off after negotiating with their boss and working many other holidays.
I’m now sitting in my apartment sobbing because my lover is getting on the bus now to travel 5 hours so they can be at work by 7 am tomorrow.
This is not the first time we’ve had to change plans due to work schedule being changed with less than 24 hours notice.
This is not the USA and I don’t know what kind of worker protection laws there are or if they can be enforced. I’m so sad that they’re dealing with this. I’m sad that we are both alone and far away from family… and my lover who is on the bus and away from the Christmas dinner I prepared.
I’m just sad. Very sad.
