My 25yo son was recruited by a hiring specialist to work in a furniture store. He was made to drive two hours for a drug screening even though the city has many local places that do this. Then he was made to do a mountain of intake documents and finally training. He was paid $100 and told he didn't have a job. He was promised a $20 per hour job and was left upset and jobless.
His GF, also 25, has worked at a southern owned grocery store for three years. She was hired as part time but allowed to work up to 40 hours without benefits. Because she's listed as part time any vacation time she takes is unpaid. She ask for a week off, she was given seven days off but scheduled to work a four hour shift in the middle. She asked her manager to fix it and was told she needed to contact her coworkers and get someone to cover for her.
My nephew, 23, works for the grandfather of big box stores. He got a job right out of highschool as part time. He's was allowed to pick up extra hours as long as he didn't exceed 40 per pay week. During the pandemic he was constantly given raises as incentive to stay at work. Now that is over all the people who were given raises have had their hours drastically cut. He is lucky to work 20 hours a week.
None of them can afford to live in their own places. They struggle to make ends meet. How can parents help their adult children? They don't want to live at home, they want independent lives with a job that will treat them fairly.
