New boss made me work Saturday afternoons … So I didn’t.

This happened a long, long time ago but I've read some good stories on here and felt like telling my story. I worked in a car dealership as a detailer/cleaner in a Pre-Delivery (PD) department as my first job out of school. It was mundane but it was work. After a few years an opportunity arose to move out of PD and into the role of Vehicle Appraiser – This was a cushy job. Company car – brand new off the lot. Petrol card, pay rise, it was a great job for a 20yo. I spent my days driving around to businesses who managed a fleets of cars when it came time to upgrade. I would simply go over every car they wanted to trade-in and note every detail and defect about each car and take it back to the dealership. My boss would then put a price on each…

My boss would then put a price on each car based on my summary and then the salesman would package a deal to sell them replacement cars. Easy life for a 20yo.

It was longer hours than normal – 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday but I had originally negotiated with the boss that I only worked a half day on Saturdays so I could continue playing football in the afternoons – something which, at the time, was important to me to keep active and involved in activities outside of work. He was cool because there wasn't a lot for me to do on a Saturday anyway – All fleet appraisals happened Monday-Friday so Saturdays, I spent a lot of time sitting around.

Less than 2 years into this role the dealership sold to a new owner who came in making lots of changes. One of those changes was that my boss was demoted back to service manager (he was originally a service manager and was offered the valuation role which he took 10-15 years earlier) and in response he tendered his resignation and left. In his place was a new guy. Not overly personable or interested in anything other than leaving his mark on the business.

One of the first things the new boss did was tell me that I could no longer take off Saturday afternoons and I would be required to work all day. I mentioned my pre-existing agreement and desire to stay active in sport to which he effectively replied – “not negotiable”.

Saturday came around and I had a decision to make… So I slept in and rang him at about 9:30 saying “You probably realised by now that I'm not coming in. I'm not going to work Saturday afternoons, I'll see you Monday” – He was unimpressed but realised he couldn't do anything about it.

On Monday I went into work as normal and he came straight to me asked for my keys to my car and told me to grab a pair of overalls and head back into PD and start cleaning cars. He took another guy out of PD and gave him my keys and said – it's your job now.

I tendered my 2 weeks notice to the PD manager and finished up there soon after taking a few days off for “job interviews” during my notice period. I wasn't overly bothered because although it was a great job with great perks, it wasn't my dream job and I didn't see myself doing that for the rest of my life.

tl;dr; Was a vehicle appraiser when a change in management took away my Saturday afternoons so I didn't show up and was demoted back to my pre-delivery role.
